A Problem Shared...

February 24, 2018

‘A problem shared, is a problem your better equipped to deal with.’

Something that I have come to realise in the past few months, is just how true this saying really is. Engaging in conversations with different people recently has given me more awareness of how much we are all going through the same things, and yet we feel so isolated - like those unwanted situations are only happening to “us”.

Our lives can be so complicated and we spend a lot of our time trying to navigate our way through the maze that is life, often feeling like we don’t have a clue where we’re going. If only we had a map to guide us, right?! But what if this “map” we’re looking for does exist in other people, and the only way to find our way is to be open and share our experiences with others? That those around us may hold the advice - or directions - that we are looking for?

I am naturally quite a guarded person; I don’t tend to discuss things openly with people, but I have come to realise myself how much of a difference sharing your thoughts can really make in relieving stress. Certain things that I didn’t understand started to make more sense, seeing them through other people’s perspectives. Doing this didn’t necessarily eliminate the problem, but, I have definitely felt better equipped to face it and overcome it.

In saying this; I am always selective of who I open myself up to. Be mindful of who you’re sharing your feelings with, trust your intuition. Don’t go chewing off your Uber drivers ear (has anyone seen the meme?! LOL). Look for people who inspire you….they don’t have to be rich, or drive a fancy car, it can be because of the values that they live by or the way that they conduct themselves in difficult situations. I think when you know, you know.

Some of you may have recently read Jourdan Dunn’s open letter on her Instagram to designer, Brandon Maxwell, in which she talks about the battles that she’s been facing with self doubt and insecurities.

Most of us would look at someone like Jourdan and think she has it all figured out...like if we had that life it would all be so sweet. The truth is; we’re all going through the struggle, it may not be the same struggle, but we’re still going through whatever it is regardless of who we are.

Hearing about someone in such a successful position talk about their vulnerabilities makes you start to realise; that if even they are fighting these challenges while seemingly having the “perfect life”...it’s not so disheartening to feel like you’re up against it sometimes.

In Jourdan’s letter she expresses how talking to Brandon made her feel less alone, more confident and ready for a change. Sometimes it’s not even advice that we need, it can be that we need to get out of our own heads by sharing with others to see something different in ourselves.
